Perceptions act as a filter through which the world is viewed.
- Ing & Gabor (2015)
Perceptions are foundational for communication and interactions (Ing & Gabor, 2015). When a person obtains information or data through their interactions with others and the world around them they need to make sense of it. According to Jean Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development people use schemata to help them categorize this incoming data as they assimilate or accommodate it to coincide with existing data in their brains (Huitt & Hummel, 2003). Our culturally formed perceptions act as directors in our brains to determine where and how to file all the incoming data. Depending on how our perceptions are programmed, and the setup of the initial schemata in our brains in regards to our worldviews, values and beliefs, and social organization concepts, our interpretation and understanding of communication in the world around us will differ. We will also respond back in particular verbal and non-verbal ways based on our perceptions.
